“Someday I will also grow older” says the sign on the façade of the building, where old people who remained without any care, attention and any living expenses, gather everyday 5 days a week, to eat, to talk and just to live the remains of their life with people of their situation.

The entrance door leads you to a big gray hall full of plants; several old fashioned sofas are next to each other, covered by handmade colorful coverlets. There are also small coffee tables opposite of the sofas, with fresh flowers. The hall guides you to the cafeteria, where dinner is being served and the air is full of smells of tasty foods, greens, fried potatoes, meat and fresh vegetables.

Usually this is one of the corners where the old people gather after dinner to talk, to read newspaper or if the weather is nice, they prefer to sit in the garden which is on the back part of the building.

“This is a place where we relax, feel ourselves protected and necessary, and time passes easily with talks, playing domino and chess” says Sikharulidze Mariame, 83. Mariame 3 times was the winner of the competition “Super grandmother” in 2006, 2009, and 2010. The charity house organizes competition every year with nominations “Super grandfather and Super grandmother” in the center, where they play the piano, dance, sing, put some performances.

“Such kind of events gives them a chance to fulfill their childhood dreams” says Guliko Romanashvili the deputy director of the charity house “Katharisis”.

They have already staged several plays like “the head of the invisible man”, “Stepmother of Samanishvili” in the charity house and in some schools.

“We often have guests from TV and from different newspaper is as we have a lot of talented grandmothers and grandparents, with whom they like to speak” says Mariame. Recently she had been invited to one of the Tbilisi local TV channel programs “Nanukashow”, where she sang a song with one of the Georgian’s musician and also danced. Mariame had moved there in 2004 with her sun who has some physical disorders. Now they are living there and it became their own house.

It is about 10 years that the charity house “Katharisis” has tried to help homeless people and thouse who has remained without care, by giving them shelter and support. The house now has 385 old people from the age of 69 up to 90. They provide everyday a 3 course meal and medical support.

Each of these old people has his/her own story. Sikharulidze Mariame was an economist and worked in the agricultural institute. She has a daughter and a son, who has serious health issues. Her son needs someone to take care of him, and her daughter just left them without any help. The pension was too small at that time in 2003 and she and her son had to move to the center.

Ketie Kakiashvili 67 years old, also attends this center. She has been attending the center for 5 years. She found herself in the center after her daughter’s and mother’s death. They died in the same year, which was she got mental disorder. She even couldn’t talk. The center helped her to come out of it.

“Thanks God that I met them, I don’t know what could have been with me if not the center” says Ketie.

There are people with physical disorder, mental disorder and people who are very old and aren’t able to take care of themselves. People there and the visitors and the stuff are very friendly.

“Our director, Mr. Zaur Lazer Aladashvili, is like a band-master and we are the troop of his” says Shandinova Margarita 69 years old . “He is always concerned about us, he always has time to listen to us, help us, of course he can say “I have a meeting or I’m busy” but not, he stays with us, he listens all these old people with their extraordinary thoughts and tries to help them”

This is already 5th year for Margarita, she is famous there with her short stories like “a grandmother on a bicycle”, “the princes” and so on. She likes to speak with people and to tell her stories, and she is always open to give interviews to any journalist that visits them. She used to be published in several of Georgian newspapers such as “Aversi”, “Mtskheta” “Madli”. Her topics are mainly about the church and famous people.

“Whenever I am in a church I pray for the other it is a bit strange to pray for me, better to ask for someone else,” says Margarita “and I pray for our director who gave us hope of life”.

Public social networks are as complex and esoteric as the imaginations of the players allow. They are ‘transformative,’ in that they let the user determine the outcome. In other words, that is pointing that on the internet, we create our ideal self in a virtual environment; unfortunately, the ideal self we created often does not transform well into real life situations. It is a human nature that we always want to make our self busy with some kind of activity. Sometimes it helps someone to be active and do something different from their daily routine.

Public social nets seems to be one of the greatest things ever created in the internet, things that have been created for uniting people from all over the world is now just changing the meaning and the role.

Instant messaging technologies have changed the casual conversation leaving behind the way as young people had communicated. New language has been created and nice, simple life conversation is now being compressed by “Emoticons” and “Acronyms”.

The social nets now have become places of “internet dating”, where everything starts form just a simple chat. The internet dating is kind of a hope that one can find the right person. Restaurants, bar rooms, cafes, cinemas, parks have been replaced by one thing “internet”, and there is no need to be creative where this time to take your girlfriend or to worry about what to wear today. But the main hazard of all those things is that one can be easily defrauded, as this is a new playground for mainly for those who are not self sufficient, and have lack of confidence in them. This is usually happens because of a nice written word, or just because of one just wants to read what he/she wants but not the real things.

It is not said that internet dating is all lie and falsification of every single word of the dialogues, in a real life happy and true dating with nice and healthy relations do exist. Internet dating is something very rapidly growing thing nowadays, but one should be aware the possibility of being lied, not to be reliable and pay attention to the things what has been said and why.

Sometimes those meetings could have an educational meaning for those who easily believe , as after being burnt once, one probably wouldn’t like to get another.

A lot of other aspects play their role in it; that is TV, Movies, happy end stories. Just one example the film “You have got a Mail” staring by Meg Rayan and Tom Hanks, is enough to dream about their own “perfect meeting”

One of the well spread ways of getting acquainted with another person is choosing someone from a long-distance. The danger of long-distance internet romance is that ,it is extremely easy for someone already involved with a partner to go out and cheat in a relatively safe (for them) environment. Get a secret email address, create a persona, and have a cell phone and, and so on, which is actual for close distance as well.

For tasting Public social nets as a dating places, one of my friends opened another account with false name and randomly sent several friend request to unknown people living and far from her and nearby. She began to communicate with her new friends, but after a couple of days, she found in her account requests from people whom she knows. She started to talk with them without telling them who is she and as a result, nothing what has been told her was true except their names.

A. K.

When we modern folks think of chocolate, we tend to think of it in its solid, sweetened form, and this is reflected in the undue emphasis which much food writing gives to solid chocolate. Yet during nine-tenths of its long history, chocolate was drunk, not eaten.

The origins of chocolate can be traced back to the ancient Maya and Aztec civilisations in Central America who first enjoyed a much prized spicy drink ‘chocolatl’, made from roasted cocoa beans. Historians do not know how long the Maya Indians of central America and the Aztecs Indians of Mexico had cultivated cacoa beans, but they had certainly done so by the time Columbus arrived in America in 1942.

The story of cocoa begins with cocoa trees which grew wild in the tropical rain forests of the Amazon basin and other tropical areas in Central and South America for thousands of years. Cacao has always been expensive. In pre-conquest times it had to be imported from tropical places in bags carried on the backs of porters.

Commercially, especially for the Aztec society, the dried nibs were used as currency. In the Maya world only the elite, merchants and warriors were permitted to enjoy chocolate. The Maya Indians and the Aztecs had recognised the value of cocoa beans both as an ingredient for their special drink and as currency for hundreds of years before cocoa was brought to Europe. The first cocoa beans were brought back to Europe by Columbus from his fourth visit to the New World. However, the many other treasures on board his galleons were far more exciting so the humble cocoa beans were neglected. It was his fellow explorer, the Spanish Conquistador Don Hernan Cortes, who first realised the commercial value of the beans. He brought cocoa beans back to Spain in 1528 and very gradually the custom of drinking chocolate spread across Europe.

The heavy import duties which had made chocolate a luxury that only the wealthy could enjoy were reduced in 1853. Chocolate and cocoa became within the reach of the wider population and a number of manufacturers of cocoa and drinking chocolate started to increase. As the popularity of chocolate grew, so the number of cocoa growing countries in the world increased. Cocoa trees need specific climatic conditions to thrive.

Chocolate has become one of the most popular flavors in the world. Gifts of chocolate molded into different shapes have become traditional on certain holidays: chocolate bunnies and eggs are popular on Easter, coins on Hanukkah, Santa Claus and other holiday symbols on Christmas, and hearts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate is also used in cold and hot beverages, to produce chocolate milk and hot cocoa.

Pure, unsweetened chocolate contains primarily cocoa solids and cocoa butter in varying proportions. Much of the chocolate consumed today is in the form of sweet chocolate, combining chocolate with sugar. Milk chocolate is sweet chocolate that additionally contains milk powder or condensed milk. ‘White chocolate’ contains cocoa butter, sugar, and milk but no cocoa solids (and thus does not qualify to be considered true chocolate).

Out of five local Sakrebulo candidates in the village Shahumian, Marneuli region, two are Armenians and three – Georgians. Four poll stations are working in the village. One of the precinct’s commission deputy chair Mariam Tetunashvill confirms that the elections are going well, without any incidents. The village where 80 percent of population is comprised of Armenians has a lot of issues but with the coming of the new elections the old promises are being forgotten.

“The village Shahumian is like an orphan, it has no parents” that is how 80 years old Seyran Paronyan describes the village. He has no big expectations from the local government elections, as the promises are always remains as promises.

“It was very good during the Comunism years, I worked in three places. Now I get pension, and this is hardly enough for bread” says Seyran

Previously Shahumian used to have 11 thousand population and now only 3500 are left. As Seyran Paronian says, there are only old people.

“The village is nice, but there are no jobs. The only solution is to open work places for the development of the village and for prevention of the migration” says the precinct’s commission deputy chair of 71 Gerasim Avetisyan.

“I have a son, and it is already fourteen years that I haven’t seen him, as he left for Ukraine to work and live, but his condition is not good enough to help us” says Seyran.

“The President Saakashvili promises work places, but nothing has been done. Let’s see, what would do our candidates after being elected”, Gerasim says.

One of the main problems of the village is that, they have no gas though there is a gas pipe-line crossing their territory to the Khikhany, when the refugees from South- Ossetia have been settled there, as the result of Georgian- South-Ossetia war. Still government has no certain solution for it; the inhabitants of the village go on with electricity, waiting for the new government for some changes.

It’s amazing but one rarely can meet a woman in the streets. As Nelli Nurinyan, teacher of the villige school N3 says, they have no works so they always stay at home. 500 pupils of the village do not have much to do. They have music school, and recently-opened sports and computer classes. After graduating from the school few of them continue their education, and those who do, either go to Armenia or Russia.

«The reason is not knowing the Georgian language. Before the level of the language was very low, but now teachers from Tbilisi has been sent to teach children, and so we also learn with them», Nelli Nurinyan says.

Being on the borders of two countries, Armenia and Georgia, the villige lacks access to information badly. They don’t have Georgian TV and Radio broadcasting or get newspapers. Only those who have satelite dishes can watch Georgian channels.

Anna Karamyan Tamara Hakobian

We are on the lookout for a great photographer with a great idea. Our Hasselblad challenge is open to all UK-based photographers of all ages. So if you are an up-and-coming photographer with a creative body of work and can come up with an imaginative response to our concept, you could be our winner.

The challenge

To enter Project Hasselblad, all you need to do is submit a portfolio of six of your strongest images (they can be shot on any format camera) which demonstrate the quality and creativity of your work, along with a concept proposal. The proposal should outline a specific project you would want to use a Hasselblad system to photograph and complete throughout the coming year. It should give details of the proposed location or locations, subject matter and creative approach. You should also explain why you feel this project is important to you and why the Hasselblad system would be most appropriate for it.

The shortlisted entries will then be judged by Professional Photographer editor Grant Scott, Hasselblad managing director Chris Russell-Fish, Phillips de Pury creative director Fiona Hayes and photographer David Loftus.

The prize

The winner’s submitted images and concept proposal will feature over three pages in the June issue of Professional Photographer. The winning images and photographer will also feature as an audio slideshow on the Professional Photographer website. The winner will be loaned the appropriate Hasselblad equipment for up to a month to create their concept, and receive the appropriate training. The equipment could be the latest H4D40 or the H4D50, along with a choice of a maximum of three lenses. That’s kit with a total value of approximately £22,000. The completed concept images will then appear in a future issue of Professional Photographer and in Hasselblad promotional material.

For your chance to win please register with Professional Photographer website first. Then upload your images to the Project Hasselblad gallery via your profile page. You will then need to email your concept as an attached word document containing your full contact details and with your submitted images embedded to feedback@professionalphotographer.co.uk. Please ensure that you title both your concept document and all of your submitted images with the same concept name.

Three years ago, people strolling down the streets of Sarajevo might have been surprised to see, and even walk through, a giant colorful tunnel made entirely of balloons. A group of students held up the tunnel which was big enough that a number of people could easily pass through it, but also light enough to carry away.

The tunnel is a potent and powerful symbol for Sarajevans as underground tunnels were often the only way food and medical supplies reached the city from 1992 till 1995.

“It is the symbol of a current political movement of young Bosnians who aspire for change,” says Sina Greinert, one of the project architects, a self described balloon artist and political scientist. “Balloons make an interesting sculptural medium, which help people explore political ideas in public spaces. Because a balloon sculpture is light, you can easily pick it up and move it, which means you don’t need any permits to build them.”<del datetime="2010-02-09T22:01"> </del><ins datetime="2010-02-09T22:00" cite="mailto:leah"></ins>

German native Greinert and some of her friends are founders of Balloons for Peace, the purpose of which is to use balloon sculptures for social changes. She was in Tbilisi in February trying to organize a similar balloon art project with school children.

The idea for Balloons for Peace started 5 years ago, explained Greinert, when she was a student in Berlin.

“Once I was walking in the streets and saw a very huge and a man wearing clothes made of balloons standing near the metro station and playing a balloon guitar. I was interested, so I approached him and we got acquainted,” she says.

“I had already some ideas at that time but when I saw him I thought why not to try,” Later she suggested her ideas to him and they started to work together.

They organized such kind of projects as “Peace for Piece,” the project rises such issues as public discourses in Sarajevo (Balkan 2006), “Balloon Pyramid,” for Kids festival 2007- colorful balloon pyramid was sculptured as a symbol which reminds of the common past of the region, “Let Bosnia Flourish” 2009- 4 meter tall balloon sculpture in the shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which should be decorated during the kids festival with their own balloon flowers the aim of which was to show that Bosnia and Herzegovina could “Flourish” if they all work together.

Last year in the Balkans, Greinert and other project organizers helped young balloon artists make a big house about 3 meters high and 6 meters long and a lot of other sculptures during the kids’ festival. “We wanted children for a couple of hours to find themselves in a magic world of their dreams,” says Greinert. “Every child has a dream about the world they want to live in.”

They have been in several countries- Poland, Hungary, Bosnia and the Nederlands. Now they hope to add Georgia to the list of countries that have tried the “Balloon World Project” though Greinert said she’s currently looking for donors.

“Sometimes it takes more than 6 months to manage everything,” she said. “The project is still in discussion process, but we hope that we can organize everything within that time frame,” she adds.

Specifically, Greinert and balloon artist Sean Rooney hope to offer Tbilisi schoolchildren the opportunity to learn some balloon art skills. First of all, they are going to let them draw and interpret the drawings with balloons.
“Making a balloon sculpture is like an architecture you need to draw first then make a model of it and then start constructing, and you always need long and thin balloons and roll balloons to finish the construction,” she said.

The project includes visiting schools and refugee camps, she said, and will last seven days with the artists performing for kids, as well as gathering the drawings of the kids and using those drawings to create a special “balloon world.” Finally, the group would present this balloon world to the wider public.

“We hope this project will have a good influence on the children of Tbilisi and will open a lot of interesting ideas for them,” says Sina.

Social Media and Blogging Guidelines

Social media and blogs are important elements of journalism. They narrow the distance between journalists and the public. They encourage lively, immediate and spirited discussion. They can be vital news-gathering and news-delivery tools. As a journalist you should uphold the same professional and ethical standards of fairness, accuracy, truthfulness, transparency and independence when using social media as you do on air and on all digital news platforms.

Truth and Fairness

• Social media comments and postings should meet the same standards of fairness, accuracy and attribution that you apply to your on-air or digital platforms.

•Information gleaned online should be confirmed just as you must confirm scanner traffic or phone tips before reporting them. If you cannot independently confirm critical information, reveal your sources; tell the public how you know what you know and what you cannot confirm. Don’t stop there. Keep seeking confirmation. This guideline is the same for covering breaking news on station websites as on the air. You should not leave the public “hanging.” Lead the public to completeness and understanding.

• Twitter’s character limits and immediacy are not excuses for inaccuracy and unfairness.

•Remember that social media postings live on as online archives. Correct and clarify mistakes, whether they are factual mistakes or mistakes of omission.

Image and Reputation

• Remember that what’s posted online is open to the public (even if you consider it to be private). Personal and professional lives merge online. Newsroom employees should recognize that even though their comments may seem to be in their “private space,” their words become direct extensions of their news organizations. Search engines and social mapping sites can locate their posts and link the writers’ names to their employers.

• There are journalistic reasons to connect with people online, even if you cover them, but consider whom you “friend” on sites like Facebook or “follow” on Twitter. You may believe that online “friends” are different from other friends in your life, but the public may not always see it that way. For example, be prepared to publicly explain why you show up as a “friend” on a politician’s website. Inspect your “friends” list regularly to look for conflicts with those who become newsmakers.

• Be especially careful when registering for social network sites. Pay attention to how the public may interpret Facebook information that describes your relationship status, age, sexual preference and political or religious views. These descriptors can hold loaded meanings and affect viewer perception.

• Keep in mind that when you join an online group, the public may perceive that you support that group. Be prepared to justify your membership.

• Avoid posting photos or any other content on any website, blog, social network or video/photo sharing website that might embarrass you or undermine your journalistic credibility. Keep this in mind, even if you are posting on what you believe to be a “private” or password-protected site. Consider this when allowing others to take pictures of you at social gatherings. When you work for a journalism organization, you represent that organization on and off the clock. The same standards apply for journalists who work on air or off air.

• Bloggers and journalists who use social media often engage readers in a lively give-and-take of ideas. Never insult or disparage readers. Try to create a respectful, informed dialogue while avoiding personal attacks.
